Dappled Sunlight is an exploration of light and shadow produced when light shines through the branches of a tree. I began focusing on tree shadows directly after graduating with my undergraduate degree, during a time when I was experiencing a period of personal reflection and change. Searching for a subject that could elicit similar themes, I began photographing and drawing tree shadows. Similar to my previous work, these drawings isolate light and shadow defined by objects outside the perspective of the viewer. Drawn using a photographs as a reference, these images contains tension between their stillness, the transience of light, and the slow growth of the trees themselves.
